UEFA could punish Celtic fans for raising Palestinian flag at Champions League match

Thousands of Celtic fans showed their support for the Palestinian people by holding up Palestinian flags on the pitch ahead of the Champions League match against Atletico Madrid.

According to British media reports, Celtic fans began raising the flags before the match began and displayed around 20 large flags in the stands before both teams came out. Thousands of smaller flags were visible around the stadium as the teams came out.

In addition, Celtic fans showed their solidarity with the Palestinian cause by singing the Liverpool hit "You'll Never Walk Alone" and the Italian song "Ah, Goodbye Friend".

Celtic have been penalized by UEFA on several previous occasions for fans raising the Palestinian flag, including fines and point deductions. With the fans raising the flag again this time, it is possible that UEFA will penalize the Celtic team again.

Celtic FC issued a statement on the day of the match calling on fans to "bravely raise the Palestinian flag" in support of Gaza. The statement said the club was saddened by the conflict in Gaza and wanted to promote peace through sport.

UEFA has yet to comment.
